What is Aikido?
Aikido is an intricate, intriguing and effective martial art, the name literally translating as the “Way of Harmony.” It was founded by Morihei Ueshiba, one of the most inspirational and legendary figures in the long history of the martial arts and has the resolution of conflict rather than the destruction of an opponent as its objective.
The techniques derive from a variety of traditional Japanese martial arts (Koryu) and rely on the deflection of force, rather than direct opposition. This makes Aikido suitable for both sexes without distinction as to size or strength, the training promoting subtle technique, aerobic fitness, flexibility and co-ordination.
