WKU BRITISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

NORTH SOLIHULL SPORTS CENTRE

BIRMINGHAM

Kicks Coaches Shane Kent and Tiffany Williams took Junior Fighters Sam Campbell, Regan Maher, and Ayesha Potts to this Open Championship Event.  Sam Campbell was fighting in the K1 Section of the 12 – 14 Years (48.1 – 52Kgs), and the two girls in the 12 -14 Years Full Contact Kickboxing ; Under 44kgs and Under 48Kgs.

Once the categories were drawn up all Three Fighters was straight through to the Finals. First up was Sam Campbell against Sonny Sowerby (Erawan Academy) .  This was body only which is not Sam’s chosen method of fighting who works best when head shots are part of his fight arsenal. Sam threw good combinations, and he showed his skill, and timing, but he did not do enough to take the win on the day, and his opponent was the more aggressive fighter. Win to Sonny Sowerby.

Next up was Regan Maher v Kateraya Bray (Rav Boys).   This was Regan’s First Full Contact Bout, and Resulted in a First Round Stoppage.   A Well Timed and Powerful Jumping Front Kick to the Face early on in the round caught Kateraya flush on, and though she came back from this Regan’s continued fast work rate resulted in a standing count, and the fight to be waved off . Big Congratulations to Regan Maher the new British Open Full Contact Champion in the 12 -14 Years (38.1 – 44 Kgs)

Ayesha Potts was also in her first full contact fight, and up against the experienced Lilly Copperthwaite.  Ayesha was given a count in the first round, but went out into the second round strong, and continued to take the fight to Lillie in the third and final round.  Lillie used her ring craft and experience to give her a well earnt win, but all credit to Ayesha who showed true fighting spirit and resolve.
