WKO World Open Championships 13/08/2022

Instructor Jamie Brown with fighters Billy Brown and Regan Maher travelled up to Barnsley for this Open Championships. Both fighters were fighting in the K1 Category and All the K1 Rounds were 2×1 Min rounds. It would go to an extra round if it was a draw.

Regan fought first in a straight final against Ruby Dickinson (Combat Academy). Both girls started strong, having results with their techniques. The 2nd round was similar but Regan’s opponent slightly edged it with her foot work, being more on the front foot throughout the round.  Win to Ruby Dickinson.

Billy was in a category with four fighters. He was drawn against Ashton Cooper (Ady Jones Taekwondo) in the Semi Final. Billy dominated the fight in the first round keeping his opponent on the ropes or in the corner scoring with big kicks and punches.  The second round was much more even with Billy’s opponent not stepping back and meeting Billy with some big knees and head kicks. The score cards at the end of the two rounds showed the fight as a draw so it went to a third round. In this round Ashton was the more aggressive forward fighter and worked effectively on the inside with Billy slower to get his shots off. Win to Ashton Cooper.

There was no 3rd Place Fight Off for Billy as one fighter in the other semi-final did not attend so his opponent got a bye to the final.

Well done to both our fighters, and to coach Jamie Brown.
